    It began on an ordinary day in 1989. A fleeting thought, like an arrow, shot its way into my consciousness. It was the dreadful truth that one day my mother would die. “What an awful thing to think!” I reprimanded myself. But the arrow would not depart so easily.     I am a feral cat. When I was a girl, my neighborhood friend and I heard the sound of tiny little mews emanating from her father’s woodpile. We excitedly began digging through the boards, discovering a litter of kittens hidden there. As we reached in to pull them out, we were surprised at the ferocity of those tiny little creatures!
