His "Jolly Jayson" smile may still be missing, but he is home, after a long, tiring and especially painful day. We left home at 5:30 a.m. to be at the hospital a little after six. His surgery was scheduled for 7:30, but was not taken until 8:30. The doctor came out of surgery at 9:00 and said it was done, and instead of two pins, they had to use four. He said it is very important for him to stay as still as possible - not much moving or going anywhere until his post-op check-up on August 20th. He is to be a couch potato. He is quite a stern doctor and said he would not give any sympathy if he is in extra pain and has not taken it easy. If he does not, it will damage the healing, including use of his arm and shoulder. We were able to see him in recovery by 10 a.m. and knew immediately he was in a considerable amount of pain. There were tears streaming from his face and very red-eyed. He could not stand the pain, even though they were giving him as much as possible intravenously. The anesthesiologist talked of doing a block - numbing the area in his shoulder for a good 24 hours but there was a slight risk of nerve damage. Jayson did not want to risk that with his guitar playing and the anesthesilogist was in agreement with him and told us many sports players will not risk that type of pain block either. They finally tried darvastat and that, so far, is working for pain control ~ but his prescription for home is not as strong as what they gave him in the hospital. He is saying his pain level is continually at a 5 or 6 (out of 10) but that is much better than the 10+ he was saying earlier. It doesn't matter if it's my little four year old with a skinned knee and those big bubbly tears coming down her cheeks or my 6 foot son wincing in pain - it breaks a mom's heart! Pray for continued pain control, and that he learns to JUST SIT ~ read, do his algebra, listen to music, play on his new laptop he just got, etc. On the way home he wanted to go into two different stores! Aaarrrggg! I ran into the Christian bookstore to get him a CD he wanted, but that was it! He went from the wheelchair at the hospital, to the car, to the couch! That is where he has to stay to heal! Thank you for your prayers and we'd appreciate the continued prayers for healing. A little pain is good - it reminds him to keep still.
