I received a call about two weeks ago from my friend Linda who said that her friend Rose needed help. This breast cancer survivor had recently been diagnosed and went through surgery for a cancerous brain tumor. Rose's bed wasn't fit for anyone to sleep in with its springs sticking out all over the place. This woman with a head full of staples--one who rarely complained--had one request, a comfortable bed. Linda and I went out that night to get Rose a new mattess and boxspring. It took all evening to find a place that had a decent one in stock. "I wonder what kind of bedding she has?" Linda asked, not wanting to take up too much of my time, but I had been wondering the same thing myself. I'm a bedding fanatic, and I wasn't about to buy something for Rose that I wouldn't want to sleep with myself, so off we went to the mall to pick up cotton sheets, a handmade patch blanket and an extremely soft throw for the couch, since Rose has been spending much of her time there as well. My son went on ahead with Linda's husband to bring the mattress over to Rose, while Linda and I arrived a bit later with the quilt and the sheets. I didn't meet Rose that night as she was sick on the couch, but I met her husband who I learned that day was an amazing gift from the Lord. He met Rose years back when he was a big brother to one of her sons. She was a single mom, and he was a man who loved children. So much so that he was arrested for protesting abortion. There was something about him, that made me wonder if I knew him from somewhere, but I think it was simply the Spirit of God at work in His children. Their house was tiny and cluttered, and it was obvious that they didn't afford the luxuries my family has taken for granted. The old tattered mattress was tossed into the yard atop grass that needed cutting and care--but they didn't have time--time I take for granted. Rose's husband has had to leave his job to care for his wife 24/7 through the breast cancer, and now this. I left their house burdened, while Linda stayed behind to wash the new sheets and make the bed. The next morning Linda returned to rub Rose's ear and her back since lying in bed has caused poor circulation in each. Linda has been returning each day before work to sponge bath her friend, turn her in bed and feed her whatever food she keeps down. Again she returns in the evening to make sure all is well. I'm so blessed to see a Proverbs 31 woman at work, I could go on all day about Linda who grows food for her family, homeschools her children, and cares for the sick, but I'll keep this story on Rose. Rose was admitted to hospital again this week. Linda noticed that her back didn't look right, and that cancer had spread there as well. Concerned I kept calling to see what progress was made but things kept getting worse. On Friday night, I got home to find out that Rose was dying. Cancer has spread through her body so quickly and she didn't look good. She's made it through the weekend, but today she's been unresponsive other than a nod here and there. That's it. It looks like she's leaving this world anytime now. The family is asking for prayer. They've told Rose that they are ready to let her go, and they hope that she has found peace to let herself leave. It would be wonderful if God would completely heal her tonight and bring her back home--if it be His will. But if not then I ask that you pray for peace for both Rose and the family. Her children are grown now, and blessed with a father. Praise God for the work He has done. Praise Him for the lives that family has touched. Praise Him for Rose who I pray I'll walk with in heaven one day. Thank you for your prayers. Blessings, ![]() Founder and Editor, Christian Women Online Magazine "Uniting Women of Faith"
